With many nominated sites still to visit in the Best WordPress Design 2009 (BWD09) contest sponsored by Fresh eVenture, I need to skip through more quickly. Only the most notable from today’s tour are mentioned. Oh by the way, I think I found the best-designed site!
- BeyondFreelancing – This site has a clean-looking design with lots of white space. It uses large, intriguing photos that augment the content, which is front and center. Achieving the tagline objective, “inspiration for entrepreneurs,” articles are generating lots of comments and retweets.
- Nazcar Multimedia Productions – Find a very clever animated header; it settles down shortly after arrival to the site, so isn’t annoying (well, except for the continuous flash sweeping across the company name). The site is owned and operated by web designer, Nazcar Pine.

Matt Haltom.
MattHaltom.com – The featured content is displayed vertically (instead of typical horizontal mode) and selectively limited to just three items. Different. Effective. Not surprising, when you learn that the site owner is a web designer. As you scroll down the page, it seems odd there is so much space between blocks of content. BUT, if you begin clicking on the menu bar tabs, it becomes wonderfully clear what Matt is doing. You must see it. If I hadn’t already voted for my own site, I’d be casting my vote for Matt Haltom.

Hi alaJoAnn who did you vote for in this contest? I helped a friend of mine but I don’t think he has the best design.

Hi Asswass (how do you pronounce that, exactly?),
I voted for my own site! alaBuzz isn’t too bad for a do-it-yourselfer using a free theme, but many of the sites entered in the contest hired professional services for their design, and a few of them are actually owned by web designers! You did the right thing to vote for your friend.
If the contest were really about design, nominees would need to qualify based on certain criteria, and the judges would need to be unbiased web design experts. But the contest is intended to be an exercise in site promotion – for Fresh eVenture, sponsor of the contest, and for the blogs entered in the contest.
That being the case, everyone is a winner. Speaking from my own experience, the contest is stimulating, I’ve posted more because of writing about it, my site traffic has doubled, it’s a fun learning experience, and I’ve met some interesting fellow-bloggers – you, for instance! I wouldn’t have read your article, if I hadn’t found BlogEngage, if I hadn’t learned about it from one of the other blogs entered in the contest.
I love the design of this site and I think I’ll vote for you. It’s simple but very attractive and easy on the eyes. Great job!
